Book Review Sunday: Her Perfect Life By Sam Hepburn

Book Review Sunday time again! The only blog posts I’m actually consistent with.

I was going to work my way down the list of the many books I have yet to review, but I finished this one today and I just had to review it, because it’s messed with my head a bit. Dan caught me frowning at it after I’d finished and questioned if I had “book problems again”. It’s a legit thing in our house.

“How far would you go to create the perfect Life? Gracie Dwyer has it all: the handsome husband, the adorable child, the beautiful home and the glittering career. The perfect life. Her new friend Juliet doesn’t exactly fit in. She’s a down-on-her-luck single parent with no money and not much hope. So just what is it that draws Gracie and Juliet together? And when the cracks start to appear in Gracie’s perfect life, can both of them survive?” (blurb taken from amazon)

So through the book we get to see the point of view of Gracie, Juliette and some random diary entries from a woman called Pauline. We see how Gracie’s “perfect life” is crumbling, and how obsessed Juliet is with her, and worming her way into her life. The characters are really well written and the author has you sympathising with Gracie and willing her to see through Juliet’s manipulations. Juliet is unlikeable, but in a weird way you start to sympathise with her as well, when you realise the depth of her issues and her obsession.

I read a lot of psychological thrillers, so I’ve gotten pretty good at guessing the outcome or at least reading into the characters actions and not trusting them. But “Her Perfect Life” totally took me in, I had no idea what was coming, and the ending totally took my by surprise. The only thing that’s bugging me now is I don’t know what happened with another situation in the book (I can’t tell you what that is without spoiling it!). But hopefully that’s just opening the book up to a sequel.

As a debut novel this is brilliant, I’d really recommend reading this book if you like thrillers and see if you can work out what’s going on before I did. Let me know if you do!
